The Music War

This is not to hate on any sort of music in any way, I just thought it should be said.
I break hip hop lovers up into 3 main groups:

1 - The lovers of the radio. This group tunes into their favorite station to find out what they should listen to, how they should dance to it, and what they should wear while theyre dancing to it. They usually never buy a complete album, unless to show off, because they only know the hit singles anyway. Their favorite rapper for 2009 is Lil Wayne.

2 - The lovers of the old school. This group believes hip hop is dead or dying. They listen to Rakim and Nas and Tribe Called Quest and even Whodini, anyone who was making music for longer than anyone can remember. They consider themselves immune to the radio, and label anything recent as trash. A member of this group leaves dancing for the mirror, and smiling for the general masses.

3 - The lovers of the new school. Sharing a lot of similarities with the previous group, they also consider themselves immune to the radio. They're also perplexed as to how they end up on the radio. They don't necessarily dislike old school, just kinda ignore it, unless it's a surface thing only. When quizzed about a particular old school artist they may retort with a clever freestyle to break free of the situation. Mixtape albums display a variety of retro colors, deep references to old school hiphop...but their main theme is the future. The future of hip hop. The future of music.

I believe there is purpose for everything, including these three kinds of music lovers. Most people do not fall into one category, of course, but have a bit of everything in them. It is the extremes of these groups however, that ruin music for the rest of us.

How many times were you trying to bump to your favorite song when a 'lover of the radio' ruined the moment with, "Yo when did that song even came out? You mad late. I BEEN heard that song....mad old, man."

How many times were you trying to bump to your favorite song when a 'lover of the old school' ruined the moment with, "You call that hip hop? Let me school you on what real music is..."

How many times were you trying to bump to your favorite song when a 'lover of the new school' ruined the moment with, "Umm, that's cool and all. But listen to this, nah nah trust me, this mixtape I got out...this is GOOD music right here man. This ain't that Soulja Boy ish."

So to make a long story short, put a little spice in your life. I suggest you hop in ya car, turn on the radio, drive to the nearest yard sale, pick up a few old records, get home, turn on YouTube, check out the underground flow...then proclaim yourself the master over all three groups, cause you officially win the music war.
That's what music is all about anyway, right guys? Schooling everybody school-able.

  1. I feel ya on this....very nice explanations of lovers of music...but what catagory do the haterz fit in? Haterz are so prevalent, I don't think they fit in any one catagory.
